The publishers of Naira Stories Magazine, in Ibadan, have given reasons why they dedicated the maiden edition of the print magazine to Nobel Laureate and Professor Wole Soyinka.
Naira Stories, an independent online news, entertainment, and literary magazine, commenced publication last Monday with stories across its major news sections and literary genres.
According to the founder and Managing Editor of the magazine, Kingsley Alumona, while appreciating the Nobel Laureate for granting them the permission to use the illustration of his face for the cover of the maiden edition of the print magazine, said that Professor Soyinka is a household name in African literature and socio-political activism.
Alumona, who is a journalist and media consultant, further said that the fundamental ideals that Soyinka espouses, such as speaking truth to power, fostering African literature, promoting Nigerian cultural heritage, and supporting creatives are what Naira Stories stands to promote as well.
In light of this, the publishers of the magazine tagged the cover illustration of the maiden print magazine, which is a collection of 15 short fictions by Nigerian writers, as thus: “Standing on the shoulders of an iconic literary giant and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.”
The managing editor of the magazine noted that since this was the first edition of the print magazine, they felt honoured to dedicate it to Professor Soynika, the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986.
Alumona said that the print version of the magazine is published triannually, rotating among three literary genres in the following order ─ fiction, first issue; creative nonfiction, second issue; and memoir, third and last issue of the year.
Aside from the triannual print magazine, he said that the online version features daily general, entertainment, and literary news, as well as opinion articles. The online version also features regular fiction, nonfiction, drama, interviews, poetry, essays, and photography, and reviews.
Alumona stressed that running a news and literary magazine is a noble endeavour that requires sustainable partnership and support, adding, “Because we are dedicated to publishing quality content, we seek ways of supporting our work. We do this through adverts and support of our readers and benefactors.”
He urged news lovers and creatives to actively follow and engage the magazine across its social media pages, which he listed as Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp.
“The magazine has come to stay. Together, its readers, writers, contributors, partners, and everyone can make a difference in society through it,” he concluded.
