Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji in the Northwest region of Nigeria have successfully rescued a former provost of the Federal College of Education Technical (FCET) in Gusau, Dr Hassan Abubakar Augie, along with his son, and recovered two motorcycles.
The rescue operation took place in Zamfara state.
According to a top military source, the rescue mission occurred on August 11, 2023. Troops from Sector 1 of Operation Hadarin Daji, stationed at Forward Operating Base Mada in Zamfara state, were on a routine patrol along the Shemori-Yandoto road at the Marke general area.
They encountered an unspecified number of armed bandits and engaged in a firefight for several hours. Due to the troops’ superior firepower, the bandits fled into a forested area.
In response, the troops pursued the bandits into the forest, which led to the abandonment of two civilians who had been abducted by the bandits.
Along with the civilians, two motorcycles were recovered from the fleeing bandits. The two rescued civilians were identified as Dr Hassan Abubakar Augie, a former Provost of Federal College of Education Gusau, and his son.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the victims had been abducted by armed bandits from their residence the previous night and taken into the forest.
Fortunately, the timely arrival of the troops led to their rescue. Following the successful rescue operation, the victims were reunited with their families.
The troops in the region have maintained aggressive vigilance and patrols to ensure the safety of the area.
