The animal kingdom is home to creatures whose eyesight is sharper than ours. While humans rely on their sight for most daily activities, many animals depend on their vision to hunt, evade predators, and navigate their environments with precision.

  • 1. Eagles
  • 2. Owls
  • 3. Cheetahs
  • 4. Goats
  • 5. Tarsiers
  • 6. Chameleons
  • 7. Dragonflies
  • 8. Mantis shrimps

In this article, there are the top 8 animals with the sharpest eyesight.

1. Eagles

In the animal kingdom, eagles are said to have the best eyesight as they can spot and focus on prey up to two miles away. According to experts, their acuity is approximately 7-8 times higher than humans.

Although eagles weigh only around 10 pounds, eagle eyes are roughly the same size as human eyes.

2. Owls

Owls are said to have the best night vision in the animal kingdom. However, it is interesting to know that owls don’t have eyeballs in the traditional sense. Instead, their eyes are more like tubes that are fused to the skull. This is advantageous as it gives owls a wider field of vision and allows them to focus on objects both near and far. However, Owls are nocturnal birds.

3. Cheetahs

Cheetahs are known not just to be among the fastest mammals on earth, but they are also known for having a vision of the best quality. A key reason that cheetahs have the best vision is that they have the highest density of photoreceptor cells in their retinas. However, unlike their other cat relatives, cheetahs have poor night vision, as they are daytime hunters.

4. Goats

Domestic goats have one of the best panoramic visions. Unlike the eyes of most mammals, their pupils are horizontal and rectangular and this gives them a field of vision from 320 to 340 degrees. This enables them to spot predators while they are foraging. They also have excellent depth perception to help them jump and climb over difficult terrain.

5. Tarsiers

A tarsier refers to any of about 13 species of small leaping primates found only on various islands of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. They have the most prominent eyes among mammals. These small primates have the largest eyes of any mammal, relative to their body size. Each eye is about the same volume as the animal’s brain.

6. Chameleons

Chameleons have some of the strangest eyes on the planet, which are able to move independently of each other. This results in almost 360-degree vision.

The reptile can also switch between monocular vision – when both eyes are used separately – and binocular vision when both eyes are used to look at the same scene.

7. Dragonflies

Dragonflies possess a large field of vision with some species of dragonfly having more than 28,000 lenses per compound eye, a greater number than any other living creature.

Due to the organization of the dragonfly eye, these insects can see significantly more colours than humans.

8. Mantis shrimps

Mantis shrimp is a crustacean that is not a real shrimp. These crustaceans have among the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. Their eyes work both independently and together so they can scan the horizon as well as focus on prey. Each eye has three focal points, allowing the animal to perceive depth with either eye.

The list above is inexhaustible as other animals possess eyesight sharper than humans.
