•Lauds late NEC chair, Nwosu on contributions to democratic governance
President Bola Tinubu has challenged Nigerian leaders to always use the opportunity of paying tributes to past heroes to have a deeper introspection into the true purpose of life, which is service to God and humanity.
President Tinubu was reflecting on the contributions of the late chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, at his interment at the weekend in Ajalli, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Represented by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi at the interment of Nwosu, the president described the deceased as a statesman whose sojourn on earth was full of impact and inspiration.
“Each time we gather to pay a last respect to the dead, nature beckons us to have a deeper introspection into the true purpose of life, which is service to God and humanity. Professor Nwosu really served the purpose of life on earth.
“Death constantly reminds us that life is not about the length of time on earth but its depth and meaning. Indeed, Professor Nwosu’s contributions to the evolution of democratic governance in Nigeria and his shared electoral experiences will continue to inspire our commitment to Nigeria’s democratic governance,” Tinubu stated.
He said the death of Nwosu was a great loss not only to the people of Anambra but also to the entire nation, having impacted Nigeria in different capacities, especially his national service as the chairman of NEC.
“As we mourn the death of Professor Humphery Nwosu, we are invited to celebrate him for his profound accomplishments and personal fulfillments as a public administrator, political scientist, and academic icon,” Tinubu declared.
“We are urged to reflect on his democratic ideals and his sense of commitment to a democratic Nigeria. These are the hallmarks of his life and times that will be cherished beyond this generation,” he stressed.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, the President told them and “all lovers of his democratic ideals to continue to make him proud even in death by exhibiting a sense of industry, integrity, patriotism, and support for our democracy, which were the core values that depicted his life and times.”
He reminded Nigerians that the country had overcome the worst time as he noted that the fragile economy his administration inherited “is now alive and on a path of sustainable growth,” adding: “Our democracy is growing, and I assure Nigerians that my administration will continue to deepen the democracy benefits for the good of all Nigerians.”
