The challenges before Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, are enormous. He should address corruption in the bar and bench so as to cleanse the wigs and robes that have been soiled by dark practices. A situation in which lawyers have become bad examples, defrauding the people they are meant to defend is indeed very sad.
The CJN should not compromise. He should carve a niche of greatness for himself by addressing the endemic corruption in the judiciary, rather than maintaining the status quo, so that he would be well judged by posterity.
The duty of the judiciary is to keep in check the excesses of the executive and the overbearing tendencies of the legislature. We thank God that the current executive is not known to be corrupt.
Onnoghen should not hesitate to wield the big stick on unscrupulous persons and bad eggs in the judiciary who have decided to continue making a mockery of the most revered arm of government by delivering judgments based on the kickbacks they receive. Onnoghen should ensure that the judiciary is restored to its former glory.
We need those days of sound judgments back.
