Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has on Monday signed the bill on Child Right Act 2021 as passed by the state house of assembly earlier in the month.
The law which is to protect the right of women, girls and children against violence and other criminal acts was designed by the EU-UN spotlight initiative as well as the state ministry of women and children affairs.
Tambuwal signed the law in an elaborate ceremony at the chamber government house, Sokoto on Monday.
The event was attended by the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, the Chief Field Officer of UNICEF in Sokoto, Mr Maulid Warfar, Plan International representative and other dignitaries.
The Governor noted that since the enactment of the Child Right Act 2003 by the Federal Government during President Olusegun Obasanjo, states were enjoined to domesticate the law which become difficult due to cultural and religious differences.
He described the law as the major landmark achievement of his administration and commended the key actors that ensured it suited and conformed with states that enshrined cultural and religious concerns.
He stressed that the state government under his watch would continue to live up to the expectations on protecting the lives of citizens especially growing children and women development.
According to him, Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law was also signed by his administration which also shows commitments to end all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), sexual abuse and related abnormalities in society.
He maintained that the bill was possible through the efforts and commitments of Sultanate Council, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Suleiman Usman (SAN), Commissioner for Women Affairs and others stressing that the law conforms with the character concerns of the people of Sokoto state.
The Governor also commended State Assembly members for their commitment, resilience, understanding and foresight on the passage of the bill.
” We deployed legislative prowess to ensure the harmonious working relationship with legislative as we initially have 16 All Progressive Congress (APC) lawmakers against 14 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the house.
” We have best Child Protection Law and VAPP and urges other states to emulates as they translate the character concerns of people of the state, ” Tambuwal added.
He assured more government intervention especially on survivors shelters and other needs mentioned during the progress report review of the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative Project in the state.
Tambuwal commended Kallon for his efforts as a Representative that visited almost all the 36 states of the federation within these trying times of security challenges.
”Governors of Nigeria were pleased to work with Kallon having more engagement with Nigerians higher than any International Representatives on diverse areas and sectors,” He added.
In his remark, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar who was represented by Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali-Junaidu, said more inputs were made with recognition lifestyles, cultural and religious values which was a focal point to other states.
Speaking earlier, Kallon lauded Gov. Tambuwal’s resilience as well other bodies and individuals to ensure the enactment of the law aimed to better the lives of citizens.
Kallon notes that EU-UN Spotlight Initiative Project was geared toward promoting the rights of individuals and ensuring the harmonious living conditions of people free from all forms of violence, abuses and empowered women and girls with requisite livelihood in the society.

The country coordinator, United Nations in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, described the signing of the law as a remarkable achievement in the life of the Tambuwal administration.
