Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan has told residents to stop shielding criminals in their communities.
According to him, “this attitude is hampering the efforts of fighting criminals in the state.”
He made this during a training workshop for civilian security stakeholders, police, and other security agencies organised by the CLEEN Foundation in Kaduna.
Aruwan condemned the assertion that those fueling the crisis are members of a particular ethnic group, saying, the insecurity in the state is a two-sided affair.
But was quick to add, that if a particular criminal commits a crime instead of his people opening up and handing him over to the authorities he would be protected.
He said this practice must be stopped, saying, “the residents are everywhere and unleashing terror on citizens without recourse to peoples identity or tribe. They are simply criminals.”
It has been observed that only two per cent of the population are responsible for the insecurity bedevilling the country.
Earlier, a security expert and Project Manager Equal Access International, Mr Gad Peter noted that those criminals are less than 2% of our population.
But they have caused a lot of havoc to us as a people, saying “it is now our responsibility to be concerned and ensure that we are all interested in securing our communities.”
In his opening remarks, the Programme officer of the CLEEN Foundation, Ebere Mbaegbu noted that his organisation is working in Kaduna as part of its policy to help in the restoring of peace in the state.
“We are working in three Frontline local governments that are prone to crisis. Our engagements with relevant stakeholders in these local government areas are yielding positive results.”
