In a bold move to tackle poverty through data-driven governance, the Sokoto State Government has approved the conduct of a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey aimed at identifying the root causes of deprivation across the state.
The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, approved the survey, which is set to run from 19 June to 9 July 2025.
The initiative is in collaboration with Redwire Marketing Consulting and will come at minimal financial cost to the state government, according to a press release from the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
The survey will cover critical sectors such as education, healthcare, employment, standard of living, and access to essential services, providing comprehensive insights into poverty and inequality levels at the household level across Sokoto State.
According to the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Abubakar Mohammad Zayyana, the initiative is a key component of the reform agenda being implemented through the State Bureau of Statistics.
“The Bureau has been repositioned to deliver timely, relevant, and actionable statistics—such as those expected from the MPI Survey—to guide inclusive policy development and socioeconomic interventions,” he said.
State Statistician General, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdulrahman Shagari, noted that the survey will be conducted in line with international best practices in poverty measurement. It will assess multiple dimensions—including education, health, and living standards—to provide a holistic understanding of poverty in the state.
The MPI Survey is strategically aligned with Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s 9-Point Smart Agenda, which prioritises security, economic development, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment. The findings are expected to serve as a foundational tool for crafting more targeted and effective policies that respond to the real needs of the people.
By initiating this comprehensive poverty assessment, the Sokoto State Government is demonstrating a strong commitment to evidence-based planning and inclusive development that leaves no one behind.
