PEOPLE ran for dear life on Tuesday night at Sabongari area of Fagge local government of Kano State when residents of the area resisted an attempt by Hisbah, a Sharia enforcement agency to raid beer parlours and seize their alcoholic items.
The law that established the Hisbah corps empowers them to arrest whoever drinks or sells any alcoholic drinks within Kano State.
However, on Tuesday night when the Hisbah invaded Sabongari to effect the seizure of alcoholic drinks they moved from one parlour to another to carry out their operation.
Unconfirmed sources hinted that the agency allegedly arrested a pregnant woman who was said to be selling alcoholic drinks. This led to confusion among those drinking at the beer parlor which further led to pandemonium between the Hisbah and residents of Enugu and Abeokuta Roads in Sabongari area.
Following this upheaval between Hisbah and Sabongari residents, people started bonfires on major streets of Sabongari area to avert miscreants from nearby areas to enter Sabongari and cause further crisis.
However, security operatives were deployed to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
No life was lost during the pandemonium.
As at the time of filing this report, all efforts to get the comments of the state Police command over the incident were not successful.
