As part of their empowerment programme for the younger ones, the Rotary Club of Ibadan Gold on Monday empowered five teenagers with sewing machines and hairdryers.
The presentation was done by the District Governor 9125, Rotarian Ayo Oyedokun, alongside the Club President, Rotarian Wale Bogunjoko, during his visit to the club, where he charged the beneficiaries of the programme to make use of the equipment judiciously.
Oyedokun said the programme was part of the Rotary year programmes where the International President, Shekhar Mehta, encouraged members to see to the welfare of the girls-child through empowerment programmes.
He said: “Rotary International President charged us this year to organise service days, for the girl-child empowerment; meaning girls from primary school, secondary or tertiary institutions are empowered to be better citizens.
“And the Rotary Club of Ibadan Gold has brought out these five teenagers who they carefully selected; they have already done their training and have passed the stages for them to be on their own, but they don’t have the machines and equipment to start on their own and that is why the club provided these for them, so that they can be on their own.
“In this country of ours, we need people to be entrepreneurs, self-reliant, rather than looking for jobs and this is one of the great things that have been done today.
“You should take care of the machines because from one, you can grow to plenty; every business started with a seed and this is a seed that has been given to you and you can grow it in such a way that it can become an empire.”
In his remark, Rotarian Bogunjoko charged the beneficiaries to use the equipment given to them well and also use them to impact positively on people around them.
“We are Rotarians and this is what we do; we try to impact lives positively on people around us. What we have done today is to empower these five teenage girls who have completed their secondary school but do not have the means to proceed further with their education.
“We felt we can help them because the five of them have learnt a trade and they have completed their trainings, but they don’t have the means to buy the equipment they need to start their businesses, so we have chosen to empower three of them with sewing machines and another two of them with hairdryers.
“We will continue to monitor their activities to encourage them and see other areas where we can assist them.
