Chairman of Senate Services, Senator Steve Karimi, on Tuesday, expressed concern over the escalating insecurity in the country, warning that it threatens to undermine the “good work” achieved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the last two years.
Karimi highlighted the resurgence of killings across the Federation, particularly in states such as Benue, Plateau, and Kogi; the persistence of banditry in the North-West; and renewed attacks by Boko Haram in the North-East, stressing the urgency of immediate investigations.
“This rise in insecurity is evident across the country. On all fronts, even in the North-East, there is a resurgence of Boko Haram. At some point, everything seemed calm, but now they are coming back.
“Look at other parts of the country—kidnapping is on the rise again, whether in the South-West, South-South, or South-East. It is happening everywhere.
“Almost daily, there is one reported incident of banditry or another in the North-West.
“I consider this resurgence an attempt by desperate groups and individuals to discredit the good work that President Bola Tinubu’s government has achieved over the last two years, especially now that discussions about the 2027 elections have begun,” Senator Karimi said in a statement in Abuja.
Karimi, who represents Kogi-West Senatorial District, commended security agencies for their sacrifices in ensuring the safety of lives and property across the country.
However, he urged the heads of security agencies to confront the emerging challenge head-on by thoroughly investigating the causes of this “regrettable development” and presenting urgent solutions.
“This government has worked tirelessly over the last two years to address the security issues it inherited, including increasing the defence and security budget.
“At the National Assembly, there has been consistent collaboration to ensure the government’s targets are met through the existing Legislature-Executive harmony, aimed at guaranteeing safety for all Nigerians.
“This was achieved to a significant degree. Unfortunately, this sudden resurgence now threatens the President’s records. I suspect sabotage, which demands immediate investigation,” Karimi added.
The senator’s remarks come as the Senate plans to convene a National Security Summit as part of a broader legislative response to renewed security challenges.
