THE Retail Insured Family Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) has commended the Inspector General of Police of Nigeria (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun and the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) CEO, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, for commencing enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Insurance in Nigeria and other compulsory Insurance.
RIFAN, a non-profit organisation whose major priority is to restore confidence of the insured on insurance in Nigeria, stated this through its Director-General, Ali Theophilus Ugwu.
He pledged willingness to align with NAICOM and NPF to ensure the effectiveness of the enforcement, and declared readiness to collaborate with the implementation committee and other relevant agencies to accomplish the mission.
After the formation of the joint committee to enforce compliance by vehicle owners, RIFAN reaffirmed its availability, and capacity to sensitise stakeholders, and its members on the development to through its robust channels of communication.
He called for an expansion of the public enlightenment space considering the fact that less than 30 percent of the over 14 million vehicles on Nigeria’s roads are properly insured, to avoid motorist being caught unawares, stressing that RIFAN has all it takes to use its platforms effectively to create awareness.
Mr Ugwu acknowledged the commitments of NAICOM and NPF to ensure the safety and protection of the public through the enforcement exercise, noting that the implementation of the policy will increase the confidence of road users, and reassure the genuineness of insurance policy in the country.
Also, RIFAN urged the relevant agencies to evolve modalities on how to eradicate unlicensed insurance agents, quacks who may use this avenue to advance their illicit trade.
He stressed that insurance should be made more professional, and the Third-party motor insurance is the largest portfolio that the industry should not overlook.
Mr Ugwu submitted that the training of personnel to engage motorists professionally during enforcement would be of an added advantage as many of them may view the exercise as punitive if proper professional ethics is not deployed in the enforcement process.
He, however, acknowledged the necessity of forging ahead with the enforcement by engaging the motorists for the safety and protection of life and property of the public.
