…ask Labour Ministry, National Pension Commission to conduct a comprehensive audit of pension payments
The House of Representatives on Wednesday tasked the Federal Government on the urgent need to address the intractable challenges faced by pensioners due to non-payment of pension increments and withholding of approved palliatives by government and allied institutions.

In his lead debate, Isiaka who applauded the vital contributions made by the pensioners in nation-building and the development of Nigeria, expressed grief over the plight amidst the current socioeconomic challenges.
Isiaka said, “The House is aware that President Ahmed Tinubu, in October 2023, approved a N25,000 wage award as a palliative and an additional N32,000 pension increase for federal pensioners in Nigeria.
“The House is concerned about the persistent and intractable challenges faced by pensioners, particularly the non-payment of pension increments approved by the government and the withholding of essential palliative measures meant to alleviate their hardships.
“Noting that many pensioners across the country continue to suffer from inadequate income, inability to meet basic needs, and deteriorating health conditions due to these unresolved issues.
“Recalling the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, which emphasise social justice, dignity of the human person, and the obligation of the state to ensure the welfare of its citizens.
“The House is aware that the non-implementation of approved pension increments and withholding of palliative measures undermine these constitutional principles and threaten social stability.
“The House is further aware that numerous appeals and petitions from pensioners and relevant associations have gone unheeded, leading to increased hardship and discontent.
“Recognizing the need for urgent and decisive action to address these challenges and uphold the dignity and welfare of our senior citizens, the House urged the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Finance and allied establishments, namely, Humanitarian Services, Accountant General, CBN, PTAD other relevant agencies, to immediately implement all approved pension increments without further delay.”
To this end, the House called on the government to release all withheld palliative measures and ensure timely disbursement to alleviate the suffering of pensioners.
The lawmakers also tasked the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, National Pension Commission (NPC) and other relevant stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive audit of pension payments and ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement process.
The lawmakers also recommended the establishment of a dedicated task force to monitor the implementation of pension policies and address grievances of pensioners promptly.
In the same vein, the House appealed to all state governments to emulate federal efforts and prioritise pension payments and welfare programs for their retirees.
The House also urged the Nigerian Pensioners’ Association (NAP) and other stakeholders to collaborate with government agencies in advocacy and oversight roles to ensure pensioners’ rights are protected.
To this end, the House mandated the joint committees on Finance, Pensions, Labour & Employment, Humanitarian Services and Legislative Compliance to carry out a coordinated oversight at ensuring compliance.
