THE Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has allayed the fears of Yorubas and northerners living in the Niger Delta region, saying they should remain calm and law-abiding.
Coordinating Secretary of PANDEF, Dr Alfred Mulade, in a statement made available to journalists in Warri, Delta State, condemned and described the quit notice call by a coalition of militants as irresponsible.
The Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators had recently declared October 1 as the day for the declaration of Niger Delta Republic and September 10 as a date for the resumption of attacks on oil and gas facilities.
Describing the umbrella militant group as faceless, PANDEF, therefore, “wishes to advise all law abiding persons from any section of the country, irrespective of tribe, creed or political affiliation, to remain calm, and go about their lawful endeavours, without fear of molestation, as everything is being done to ensure their safety and protection.”
PANDEF particularly “urges all our compatriots in the Niger Delta region, particularly the youths to remain calm, patient and patriotic, as we re-double our efforts towards the peaceful resolution of the challenges in the region, including the Restructuring of the country along the lines of Fiscal Federalism.”
The leaders appealed to the agitators to sheathe their sword at a time PANDEF is in talks with the Federal Government, adding that soon “discuss the various concessions reached with Mr Acting President at the Inter-Ministerial Committee Meeting.”
Speaking further, PANDEF said: “Indeed, this group should know that there is no basis for this kind of this action; it is most irresponsible, and should be discountenanced.
“PANDEF is committed to the attainment of peace and sustainable development of the Niger Delta region, hinged on equity and justice, by constructively engaging the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders, on behalf of the region.”
