A suspected armed robber was, on Tuesday night, shot dead during a gun duel with the police in Igbara-Oke, in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, while one other member of the gang was arrested.
It was gathered that the suspected armed robbers had earlier invaded a bakery in Akure and attempted to rob the owner of the bakery but failed to get cash from the bakery.
According to a source, the armed men left with the vehicle of the owner of the bakery but the police from the Okuta Elerinla Division chased the robbers to Igbara-Oke where they exchanged gunshots with police.
One of the robbers was shot dead while one other was arrested while others fled inside the bush leaving the vehicle.
In a similar development, police in the state, on Tuesday, foiled an attempt by a five-man gang to dispossess a cocoa merchant the sum of N13m in a day broad daylight.
The robbers were said to have trailed the cocoa merchant from a bank and blocked him at the Oshinle area of the capital city, but the man ran away with some of the money.
It was gathered that the police who responded to the distress call of the people of the area arrived in the area while the robbers began to shoot sporadically before they escaped from the scene and abandoned their vehicle.
However, it was learnt that some boys in the area who had earlier helped the cocoa merchant when he was running from the robbers stole some part of the money after the robbers abandoned their vehicle.
A source said the sum of N2m was shared by the boys from the money they found in the booth of the merchant car
A Police source disclosed that the cocoa merchant was about to disburse the money to some cocoa farmers who do not have bank accounts but preferred their payment in cash
The source said investigations revealed that the sum of N2million was stolen from some of the cash the victim left in the booth of his car and shared by the boys.
Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, said all the people involved in the stealing of the money had been arrested.
Ikoro said detectives from the command are on the trail of the fleeing armed robbers and assured that they will be brought to book.
