A bullion van conveying money to Akure from Ondo town narrowly escaped a robbery attack, on Thursday, when daredevil armed men attacked the van.
The armed men overtook the bullion van and blocked the vehicle and started shooting sporadically into the air to scare away people but the policemen on the escort of the bullion van repelled the armed robbers.
This heavy shooting caused panic in the town while shop owners hurriedly closed for business and residents ran helter-skelter to avoid being hit by strayed bullets as the armed men were confronted by the policemen on the escort of the bullion van.
According to an eyewitness, who explained that the armed robbery was foiled by the policemen but said some of the policemen were hit by the robbers’ bullet and they were rushed to the hospital after the robbers took to their heels.
He said “these devils attacked the bullion van in broad daylight but the policemen confronted them and the robbers had to run away.
“But three of the policemen were hit by the bullet and sympathisers rushed them to the hospital for treatment.”
He, however, said security operatives within the town mounted roadblocks at different locations to check the movement of vehicles into the town and to restore normalcy in the town.
A police officer from the Yaba division who confirmed the development said the attack was repelled and foiled by the police attached to the vehicle.
He said some men have been drafted to trail the hoodlums who escaped through Ile-oluji road, and assured that the armed men would be arrested and brought to book
“It was a failed attempt by the robbers. They attacked the bullion van of a new generation bank going to Akure, unfortunately, three of our men sustained injury but they have been rushed to UNIMED for treatment,” he said.
Attempts to confirm the incident from the State Police Command were not successful as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) could not be reached.
