Police confirm attack on station in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that unknown gunmen attacked the Isi-Uzo Divisional office, stealing arms and ammunition. Mr Daniel Ndukwe, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to journalists in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ndukwe attributed the attack to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

He stated that tactical police operatives were on the trail of the armed hoodlums and that they were repelled by police officers on duty at the Isi-Uzo Police Division.

“The miscreants attempted to attack the Isi-Uzo Police Division of the Command but were repelled by Police Operatives on duty.

Many of the miscreants escaped with gunshot wounds, while one police operative sustained a gunshot wound and is receiving treatment in stable condition,” Ndukwe said.

Local reports indicated that the gunmen attacked the Isi-Uzo Divisional Police Station in Ikem, Enugu State, in the early hours of Tuesday and stole arms and ammunition from the station’s armoury.

Witnesses stated that the gunmen arrived at the unfenced police station at around 2 a.m. in a Toyota Sienna bus, chanting slogans related to the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“They came through Eha-Amufu and left through the same axis, but it’s not possible they got to Eha-Amufu township or crossed to Nkalagu; otherwise, they would have encountered the soldiers in that area. It’s possible they went through Aguamede to Benue state,” a source explained.

According to the reports, a police officer on night duty at the station was shot but survived. The divisional police station has previously experienced attacks by armed robbers who targeted banks in Ikem and Eha-Amufu, leading to the closure of banks in the area for over 10 years.

The Isi-Uzo Divisional Police Station is the only one in Isi-Uzo LGA, with the closest police station located in Obollo-Afor, a 30-kilometre distance away.
