Police arraign man in Ekiti over alleged stealing of yam tubers

A 35-year-old man, Sunday Williams, was on Monday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing tubers of yam.

Williams, whose address was not given, is facing a charge over stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on November 1 at about 06:00 a.m at Idi Agba off Ilawe road in Ado-Ekiti.

He said the defendant went to the farm of one Mr Folorunso Omotosho and stole tubers of yam valued at N20,000.

Leranmo said the offence contravened section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Tope Salami, urged the court to grant his client bail and promised that the defendant would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case until November 25 for hearing.
