IT was a day of songs, tributes, documentary when the Justice Development Peace and Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan organised a day of tributes and songs to celebrate its late director, Reverend Father Ezekiel Ade Owoeye, who transited on October 1.
Although the event was billed to celebrate the life of Reverend Father Owoeye, a mournful atmosphere pervaded the venue as those who knew and worked with the late director couldn’t stop tears from rolling down their cheeks.
Speakers after speakers testified to the exceptional character of the deceased.
The deputy governor of Oyo State, Mr Rauf Olaniyan, who attended the event, spoke glowingly about his relationship with the late Reverend Father Owoeye, just as he said the late director lived and served humanity.
In her opening remarks, a member of staff of the JDPC, Mrs Adenike Ibitara, highlighted the commitment of Reverend Father Owoeye to the development of humanity, be it the underprivileged, physically-challenged persons or farmers and traders groups, among others.
Mrs Ibitara said Father Owoeye’s efforts through the JDPC had touched thousands of people and impacted lives.
The Permanent Secretary of the Oyo State Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs C.A Abioye, said JDPC as one of its longest-standing partners in assisting women and the under-privileged.
A magistrate in the Oyo State judiciary, Magistrate Toyin Omotoso, also shared how she met Father Owoeye over 25 years and how he assisted and contributed to where she is today.
There were also messages from several participants from different parts of the world who had worked at one time or the other with Father Owoeye.
Finally in his remarks, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, Archbishop Abel Leke Abegunrin, said what he learnt from the comments of the people is that people should work for humanity, as that is the only thing that would speak for us in the end.
Archbishop Abegunrin described Father Owoeye as a very organised man who never did anything without obtaining permission for it.
There was also a documentary on the life and times of the late Father Owoeye, and the event ended with songs.
