Preparations are in full gear for the much-anticipated 2023 edition of the Idoma International Carnival, touted as the largest celebration north of the Niger.
This annual fiesta, which has become a cultural phenomenon over the past decade, is set to unfold in Otukpo, Nigeria’s acclaimed Texas City and the traditional headquarters of Idoma land.
Scheduled to take place from December 23 to 26, 2021, the carnival is the brainchild of Chief Edwin Ochai, who founded the event to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Idoma people while providing a platform for entertainment and entrepreneurship.
This year’s carnival theme, “Olonye K’acheolala,” translates to “Sweet Things of Our People.”
Chief Edwin Ochai explained that this theme is a celebration of the positive aspects of Idoma culture, aiming to highlight the sweetness and richness of the community’s traditions and values.
“’Sweet Things of Our People’ signifies our commitment to accentuate the aspects of Idoma culture that bring joy, unity, and pride. We want to showcase the sweetness and richness of our traditions, emphasising the values that have sustained our community through generations,” he said in a statement to unveil this year’s activities.
The carnival has historically attracted prominent Nigerian industries, organisations, corporate entities, and influential personalities from the arts and social scenes.
Beyond its cultural significance, the event serves as a lucrative economic venture, a platform for youth empowerment, and an innovative entrepreneurship project.
The Idoma International Carnival is renowned for its diverse lineup of events, blending cultural showcases with entertainment. The schedule for this year includes:
23rd: Arrival and Resignation Christmas Cantata
24th: Walk for Peace, Vikers Parade, Idoma Talent Show, LED-Neon Theme Park
25th: Carnival Parade featuring Masquerades and Caribbean Costumes
Evening of the 25th: Culture Show with Live Bands, Traditional Displays, Cultural Fashion, Local Food Contest, and Village Experience
26th: Nigeria Carnival Queen and African Culture Award Ceremony
Chief Edwin Ochai stressed the carnival’s broader purpose, stating, “The Idoma International Carnival aims to attract our best in the arts, sports, fashion, academia, economy, agriculture, and business to facilitate common grounds for building a self-helping community.”
In response to inquiries about the artistes slated to perform at the carnival, Chief Ochai shared an air of mystery, stating, “The list of artistes for this year’s carnival will be unveiled in the offing. Carnival revellers should expect top entertainers from Idoma land and beyond to grace our stages. We are curating a lineup that will truly elevate the entertainment experience for all attendees.”
