A renewed hostility between Gabapentin and Kashi-Koko villages in the Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in the death of one person during a land dispute that erupted between the two warring communities.
According to an investigation by the Nigerian Tribune, the incident occurred on Saturday, stemming from a longstanding crisis between the two communities, which has led to ongoing violence.
It was reported that the land dispute has existed for many years without resolution, resulting in the death of an unidentified young man and injuries to several others.
A community source, who wished to remain anonymous, told journalists in Minna on Monday that the violence is ongoing.
The source called for urgent intervention from Niger State Governor Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, as well as local security operatives, to prevent further escalations.
The source further appealed to the State government and the security agencies on the need to end the crisis in order to restore peace and tranquility in the area with the view to enhance meaningful growth and the development of the communities.
In 2018, there was a significant land dispute between the communities of Anfani and Gaba, which resulted in multiple deaths, numerous injuries, and the destruction of homes and properties due to the ensuing communal clash.
As of the time of this report, filed on Monday in Minna, neither the state government nor the leadership of the State Police Command had issued an official statement regarding the situation.
