An Ondo State Magistrate Court sitting in Ondo town has sentenced a 25-year-old farmer, Hassan Kazeem to two months imprisonment for selling adulterated palm oil.
Kazeem was brought before the court for mixing two kegs of palm oil with chemicals and water, selling it to unsuspecting customers as palm oil.
He was said to have committed the offence on August 22, 2021, at about 6 pm, at Sabo market, Ondo.
The convict who sold out the adulterated palm oil at the rate of N34,000, pleaded guilty to the charge, asking the court to forgive him with a promise not to commit the crime again.
He explained that he needed some money to settle some domestic issues and had to find means to the needs of his family while it was getting late
He said “I was looking for N32,000 to travel around to search for my missing wife and children who travelled to our home town and did not hear from them.
“I need to gather some cash to look for them that is why I had to adulterate the palm oil because I have no one to borrow from.”
The Police Prosecutor, ASP. Iyabo Omolara urged the court to give judgment according to the plea of the accused.
Presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Toyin Olowookere, in her judgment, found the accused guilty and sentenced him to two months imprisonment without the option of a fine.
