Hon Linus Abba Okorie, House of representative member representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo federal constituency of Ebonyi state, has trained no fewer than five thousand women and youths of his constituency in Agriculture Value Chain.
The 5-day training organised by Okorie in collaboration with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike and National Root Crops Research Institute also in Umudike includes piggery, poultry and cassava productions.
According to the lawmaker who is also the House Committee chairman on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, said the training was aimed at ensuring that the constituents are financially stable to make food available for the masses.
Okorie who was represented by one of his aid Ernest Nwafor, said Agriculture is the basic thing the nation is looking into, following the dwindling oil revenue.
“Yesterday years, what we focused on was oil but the new thing now is agriculture. Food is something that you cannot do without and the population of the country is multiplying on a daily basis. So, Agriculture is highly needed to make life meaningful.
“The beneficiaries of this training will be empowered financially so that they will be able to start something on their own and after the training, a lot of them will be self-reliant and become an employer of labour and that is the target”, he said.
In his part, Ukauba Anthony, a procurement officer with Crops and Research Institute Umudike said the capacity building training which he said was attracted by Okorie was aimed at training the youths and women of the constituency to enable them to become entrepreneur in Agriculture.
“By the end of this, they will be equipped with a lot of new technologies, new ideas and improved knowledge on Agriculture and they will never see Agriculture the way they used to see it. It will enable them to open up small entrepreneur businesses so that they can feed themselves and their people”, he said.
However, in appreciation, some of the participants in their different remarks, including Ogbu syvester Ngozi, and Okorie Kenneth Okechukwu commended the lawmaker for the empowerment programme which has put food on their tables.
