A sociocultural organisation in the ancient town of Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, the Galaxy Clique Offa, has underscored the importance of mental and physical wellness as it commissions a health facility, part of efforts to improve healthcare access and combat pressing health challenges in the community.

Speaking at the event, the chairman of the club, Lukman Popoola, emphasised the need to address kidney disease, which he described as a critical health issue among members of the community.

He said that the topic of the program, “The Burden of Kidney Disease,” is apt and worth discussing, adding that “many families in our community have lost loved ones to this ailment. This facility will serve as a means of combating this challenge and improving health outcomes.”

Popoola also highlighted the growing menace of drug abuse among youths, linking it to societal insecurity.

“Through our annual colloquium, we engage stakeholders and experts to brainstorm on pressing societal issues. In one of our recent sessions, we addressed the menace of drugs and its impact on insecurity. Our goal is to create awareness and guide our youths toward a more productive path,” he said.

Acknowledging the contributions of the Kwara State Government and the State Hospital Management Board, Popoola commended their support in actualising the project while also appreciating club members and the community for their collective efforts.

Kidney Disease: A Public Health Concern

The guest speaker at the event, Professor Timothy Olarewaju, talked about the alarming prevalence of kidney disease in Nigeria, saying that chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects an estimated 12-20% of the population.

He emphasised that CKD remains a leading cause of mortality, particularly among young, productive individuals, due to limited access to affordable care.

“Kidney disease is prevalent worldwide, and it affects all age groups, although it is common in older age groups. Early detection and treatment can save lives and reduce the financial strain on families,” the health expert noted.

He also called for increased public awareness, early screening, and the inclusion of kidney care in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to combat the rising prevalence of CKD.

Government’s Commitment to Healthcare in Offa

Representing the Kwara State Governor, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, praised Offa’s commitment to community development and wellness initiatives.

She highlighted the success of the state’s “Project Ten Million,” which screened over 100,000 residents for hypertension and diabetes—key risk factors for kidney disease.

Dr El-Imam urged the public to prioritise hospital care over unverified traditional remedies such as local herbs (Agbo). “There are multiple studies showing that Agbo may not be safe for long-term use. Please, when you feel unwell, come to the hospital,” she advised.

She also stressed the importance of regular health screenings and exercise, particularly for individuals aged 40 and above, while encouraging residents to purchase health insurance policies at an affordable rate of ₦15,000 per year.

Dr El-Imam announced additional government support for Offa General Hospital, including solar power installation and renovations, as part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in the state.

The event was attended by dignitaries, stakeholders, and residents, marking a significant milestone in the Galaxy Clique’s efforts to enhance healthcare and community development in Kwara State.
