THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Tuesday, disclosed plans to establish a radio station for improved access to information.
Director General of the scheme, Major General Suleiman Kazaure made the disclosure in Abuja, at the 2018 press and public relations officers’ workshop themed: Retooling NYSC PR machinery for greater output.
He said the move is part of the scheme’s communication strategies which is in response to the rapid growth in corps population and increased stakeholder expectations.
His words: “I am happy to inform you that in furtherance of management’s resolve to expand our public relations tools and get Nigerians to be more aware of our operations and achievements, we are exploring the possibility of establishing a radio station for the NYSC.
“Given the fact that the scheme has recorded significant achievements in recent times, there is the need to attract louder applaud from the public through enhanced publicity. We must, therefore, focus on giving adequate publicity to our feats in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, the health initiative for rural dwellers and the Community Development Service, among others.”

While stressing the importance of social media as a public relations tool in the contemporary world, he tasked the scheme’s social media team both at the state levels and the headquarters on professionalism.
He said this is to avoid backlash from the public as a result of posting inappropriate content.
“May I also remind you of the place of social media usage as a public relations tool in the contemporary world. Given the fact that young graduates are part of our primary stakeholders, we must avail the scheme of the benefits of the various social media platforms which the youths find so appealing.
Earlier, the Director, Press and Public relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi in her welcome address, stated that the workshop is aimed at ensuring progressive actualization of productive and potent public relations platforms across the country.
She said the training will accord participants the opportunity to get updated on the current trends in public relations practice and further sharpen their skills for optimal performance.
“It is pertinent to affirm that this workshop is anchored on the vision of the NYSC Press and Public relations unit which seeks to make the scheme a focused, proactive, creative, friendly, responsive and result oriented organisation that its various publics and indeed Nigerians will be happy and proud to be associated with,” she said.
