The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Jigawa branch, has called on the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to clampdown on commercial drivers using vehicles with one headlamp.
NURTW’s Chairman in Jigawa, Alhaji Usaini Umar, made the call in Dutse on Monday when he spoke at 2017 United Nations Global Road Safety Week/West Africa Road Safety Organisation (WARSO).
Represented by Yakubu Muhammad, a Trustee of the Union, Umar said that the gesture was to check incessant accidents caused by such vehicles on major roads across the state.
‘’I want to use this opportunity to call on the FRSC to arrest our members, who are using vehicles with one headlight.
‘’Some of the habits of our members are very embarrassing and dangerous and the FRSC is the one that has the power enforce all the traffic laws.
‘’So, such vehicles should be impounded until their drivers fix the headlights.
‘’But the same measure should also be applied to commercial drivers,’’ he advised.
The NURTW boss also commended the commission’s officials for creating awareness among drivers on dangers associated with speeding, overloading, reckless driving and other traffic offences.
The chairman urged members of the union to continue to obey all traffic rules and regulations in order to save lives and property.
Responding, the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Angus Ibezim, promised that the commission’s officials would continue to do their best to check recalcitrant drivers.
‘’Obeying traffic laws is one of our major challenges in the state, and this issue of headlight requires night patrols.
‘’And in this present situation night patrols is risky, and if motorists cannot obey us during the day time, then what do you expect in the night?
‘’But we will not shy away from our responsibility even though we are looking at the risky aspect of it.
‘’And we will do our best to carry out night patrols at least between 7p.m. and 8p.m. to check such vehicles,’’ he said.
