The Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo has been offered a hosting right to the All Africa University Games coming up in 2024.

The President of Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA), Professor Stephen Hamafyelto, announced this offer while he led NUGA officials, who included the secretary-general, Mr Bola Orodele, on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, at her office, on Tuesday.

He said based on upgraded facilities on the ground at LASU and the vision of the leadership, particularly as regards the sixth strategic goal to promote participation in sports and recreational activities, the university should be successfully hosted the continental competition.

He said he had been to many universities in the country but none has a detailed goal as LASU for sports

“So, this is the opportunity for your university to place itself on the world map through sports because when you play host to other African countries, the rest of the world will take note,” he added.

Prof Hamafyelto, in a statement made available by LASU’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya, on Wednesday night, explained that the Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is also the visitor to LASU had already given his nod for the state through LASU and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to cost-host the competition in 2024, even as the rest of Africa are equally ready to come to Nigeria for the games.

“Consequently, all we need now is your approval for us to write to African Sports Federation (FASU) which is in charge of the competition to come to LASU and I believe that once you can host Africa, you can certainly host the NUGA, which is for Nigerians only,” he added.

In her response, LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, said the university is interested in hosting the competition. According to her, while we are delighted as a university to receive your team, I am particularly happy at your offer to host the games.

She pointed out that if the governor had promised to back the university is hosting the competition, she as a VC is particularly happy to give her full support in hosting it.

The All-Africa University Games is a regional multi-sports event for university students in Africa organised by the African Sports Federation (FASU). The games were first held in 1975 in Accra, Ghana and the next edition which is 10th in the series will be held next year in Nairobi Kenya between June 6 and 10.
