NIGERIAN troops sent to The Gambia for the purpose of protecting the mandate given to the new president of the country, Adama Barrow, are due back in soon, Senate President Bukola Saraki has disclosed.
Emerging from a meeting with acting President Yemi Osinbajo along side Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday, he told correspondents that the meeting was to enable the acting president to brief them on the state of the troops.
He said they were informed that the Navy and the Air Force would return from the mission even though some troops would be left behind in the country.
“The acting president is briefing us on our troops to Gambia and what the situation is. And that the navy and the Air Force will be coming back and that it is likely some troops will be left behind,” Saraki said.
Nigeria had last month sent troops to The Gambia as part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) force to pressure former President Yahya Jammeh who was defeated in the last presidential election to hand over to Barrow.
