A Nigerian Sociologist, David Ademule, has won a fully funded scholarship to pursue his doctoral studies at Mississippi State University, United States, where he will resume classes in the fall of 2021. The highly competitive scholarship covers a full tuition waiver and monthly stipend in exchange for teaching and research-related duties.
In the scholarship offer letter, Dr. Nicole Rader, Departmental Head and Professor of Sociology, wrote, “I am pleased to offer you a graduate teaching assistantship position in the Department of Sociology at Mississippi State University, beginning on August 16, 2021.”
Upon resumption in the fall, David is expected to work under the supervision of Dr. Raymond Barranco, an associate professor of sociology, to expand his master’s thesis, which focused on the relationship between youth unemployment and involvement in cybercrime. Specifically, David will be working on merging U.S. census data with the National Incident Based Reporting System’s data to determine neighborhood contexts influencing the rates of white-collar crimes in the United States.
In addition to his research activities, starting from his second year, David will likely take up teaching responsibilities. He is expected to teach introductory courses that explore contemporary issues within the U.S. criminal justice system. As an international student, David’s knowledge of the criminal justice system in other jurisdictions positions him to make comparative analyses with the U.S. criminal justice system, potentially enriching students’ knowledge.
Reacting to the award, David told our correspondent, “It is a great honor to be selected for this prestigious award at Mississippi State University, which is one of the best universities in the U.S. South. I will continue to work hard toward researching white-collar crimes and advancing knowledge in the field of sociology. I look forward to experiencing the new cultural environment that awaits me in the fall.”
Ademule earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Benin in 2012 and a master’s degree in criminology from the University of Lagos in 2018. He was also the overall best student in his high school in 2007, where he served as the Assistant Head Boy.
Ademule’s essays on national issues have also appeared in influential media outlets such as The Nation, Premium Times, and the Nigerian Voice.
