Linus Okorie, Founder of GOTNI Leadership Centre has said that from the history of Nigeria, there has been a deficit of leadership capital which according to him brought the country to the mess it is currently facing.
Okorie also said that many persons occupying leadership positions in the country do not have the prerequisite leadership training that is necessary for them to discharge their duties effectively.
Addressing journalists ahead of the National Leadership Conference organized by GOTNI Leadership Centre scheduled to hold in Abuja this month, Okorie said organisations and businesses die completely and go into oblivion, as a result of the deficit of leadership capital.
“The truth of the matter is that no organization has made progress unless there is sustainable leadership capital. The history of Nigeria, over the years, has been filled with a deficit of leadership capital, many people who are promoted into leadership positions, do not have the prerequisite leadership training that is necessary to be able to make those roles work for them effectively.
“You have seen organizations really die and people are wondering, why is this organization that has so much future, why is this institution that has the most promise, why did it just disappear, why did it die? The results are simply because of the fact that a lot of the people who work with the organizations lacked leadership principles and values and models that are necessary to drive organizations”, he said.
He said GOTNI over the years has consistently been organizing leadership conferences, emerging leaders conferences and different programming to enlighten Nigerians on the great need for leadership development.
“I’m excited to let you know that for the first time in the history of GOTNI I, we are announcing the National Leadership Conference. The National Leadership Conference is the first of its kind since GOTNI was born 30 years ago. I mean, this is the first time that we are hosting the National Leadership Conference.
“The National Leadership Conference is a gathering of middle-level managers, business owners, from different sectors of the economy, we’re talking about private sector leaders, public sector leaders, people who drive policy, people who implement policy, operational leaders, people who actually make things happen, we are saying that there’s a need for us to gather at the Transcorp Hilton for two days, 23rd and 24th of June 2023 to discuss critical leadership issues, to learn critical leadership values, that can help in four critical areas.
“Number one will be to help those who are going to be participating, who will be sponsored and sent by their organizations to attend the conference, to enable them to understand leadership dynamics.
To work with teams, there are difficult human beings in teams, there are people who feel familiar with teams, how can the leader navigate the difficulties of human complexities and work with those teams to achieve the result that the organization needs? That’s the first critical area that they will improve their competencies on, how to work with diverse teams and generate results that are sustainable.
“The second learning point will be how leaders can in their 21st century basically learn how to continue to create a learning system for themselves, how can leaders continue to be in the learning space in the refinery, where learning occurs daily?
“How can leaders gain so much knowledge and have the capacity to transfer knowledge to their organizations, taking advantage of the external environment and being progressive and taking that knowledge that is hitherto in their minds and heads, to make sure that that knowledge is impactful within your organization?
“The third learning point will be how will lead us in the 21st century, identify specific visions and goals and be able to, first of all, understand the vision that led to the setup of the organizations and how the vision can be transferred from themselves to other members of the team and how they can actually pursue those visions and achieve those visions, how can they help with founders of the organizations to actually get the job done?
Faith Aziegbemi, Head of Training at GOTNI Leadership Centre said the Conference with the theme ‘Leadership For Sustainability’ will equip the organization’s team with the leadership competencies to not just be able to create and cast the compelling vision but to also be enabled to rally around the organization’s vision.
“Leaders seek to have teams who can rally around their visions, teams that can help them maximize their bottom line results and this is the reason why the Gotni Leadership Centre has put together the National Leadership Conference to equip your team with the leadership competencies to not just be able to create and cast the compelling vision but to also be enabled to rally around your vision”, she noted.
