The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano has reported a total of 1,547 cases of human rights violations from January 2023 to the present.
Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC Kano state coordinator, provided this information during an interview. Among these cases, 1,320 have been concluded, while 227 are still ongoing.
Abdullahi explained that the complaints were categorised into six thematic areas, including women and gender rights, rights of children, civil and political rights, discrimination, and economic and socio-cultural rights.
The most significant number of cases involved the abandonment of family responsibilities, with 720 complaints, followed by domestic violence with 250 cases. Custody and access to children had 27 cases, while forceful marriage had 10.
The other categories had the following figures: rights of children (310), survival and development (300), sexual abuse (10), civil and political rights (32), unlawful arrest and detention (12), threat to life (5), access to justice (15), and discrimination (25).
Abdullahi also mentioned that the NHRC is dedicated to achieving international and local recognition in the field of human rights advancement.
The commission has made significant progress on the international level by being elected as a governing board member of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and a member of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions Working Group on Migration.
He credited the success to the commitment of the federal government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who signed and ratified the protocol of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa.
This demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and the full realisation of the rights of people living with disabilities (PWDs).
Furthermore, Abdullahi highlighted that there have been numerous human rights violations in the context of migration and commended Nigeria for its efforts to preserve the rights of migrants.
