A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Sergius Ogun has said that the national assembly might pass two versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
He said any amendment to the Act already agreed by the committee would certainly not come from the House of Representatives because the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila said it in re-affirmation of what colleagues in the committee had told him.
Sergius said this on Channels TV which was monitored by our correspondent.
Sergius who represents the people of Esan North-East/Esan South-East Constituency said he engaged members of the committee who assured him that they did not agree on such changes.
Nigerians have been mounting pressure on the national assembly to ensure the Electoral Act amendment bill is passed with provision for electronic voting and transfer of results, ahead of the passage of the bill in both chambers.
Sergio’s argued that: “The idea of amending an Act is to improve on it, I think it is going to be laid today or tomorrow and we will consider clause by clause of it and then the third reading, and it will be sent to the President for assent.
“It was never from the House, whatever happened was in the Senate. My colleagues in the House said there is nothing like that.
“They even went back and approached the Chairman of the committee to say that this is not what we agreed on, we are not going to accept it, the chairman of the committee agreed. So if anything happened at all, it is definitely not from the House,” he concluded.
It would be recalled that the national assembly has raised a conference committee to harmonize the percentage equity for the host communities in the recently passed PIB.
The Senate at the last minute changed the agreement of the joint committee on PIB from 5 percent to 3 percent after its conference with the Minister of Petroleum and the GMD of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at the chamber of the Senate.
