THE National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has lamented what it called lack of adequate number of teachers of Islamic Studies in Lagos State.
The organisation, at a press conference in Ikeja last weekend, addressed by its coordinator in the state, Alhaji Isiaka Salami, said the number of teachers of the subject had continued to reduce due to retirement.
NACOMYO put the total number of Islamic Studies teachers across the state before the outbreak of COVID-19 at 267, saying the updated number was 220.
“The number before the pandemic (267) was a far cry as the teachers were not enough to go round all schools in Lagos, not to talk of when the number keeps reducing without any known attempt to replace the retired teachers or augment the initial deficit,” it lamented.
The organisation recognised the state’s investment in security but called for more proactive and sophisticated response in view of increasing wave of kidnapping in recent weeks.
It challenged government at all levels to show leadership and be more alive to their responsibilities in order to secure the loyalty of the citizens.
The body equally charged the government to ensure proper monitoring of “our borders and ports to ensure that harmful substances are not imported into the country.”
It also called on parents and educational institutions to join government in stemming the tide of drug abuse in the country.
