The persistent occurrence of ear wax is typically caused by a combination of genetic factors and physical interference with the ear’s natural self-cleaning process. Some individuals are simply predisposed to produce more ear wax, or wax that is naturally drier and harder, making it more prone to accumulation.
Narrow, curved, or very hairy ear canals can obstruct the natural outward migration of ear wax, leading to blockages. Bony growths in the ear canal (osteomata) can also have this effect.
Frequently using cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other items to clean the ears is a leading cause of persistent issues. These items don’t extract the wax; instead, they push it deeper into the ear canal, causing impaction and potentially stimulating the glands to produce even more wax due to irritation.
Regular use of in-ear headphones, earbuds, or hearing aids can physically block the natural exit of ear wax and push it deeper into the canal. The constant contact can also stimulate excess wax production.
As people get older, ear wax naturally becomes drier and harder, making it less likely to exit the ear on its own and more prone to accumulation. Chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis can affect the skin in the ear canal, leading to irritation, increased shedding of skin cells, and increased wax production or blockages.
Conditions such as outer ear infections (otitis externa, or “swimmer’s ear”) can cause inflammation and swelling, leading to an increase in wax production as a protective response. Regular exposure to dusty or polluted environments or even high pollen counts during allergy season can irritate the ears, prompting the body to produce more wax to trap these foreign particles.
For persistent or impacted ear wax, it is recommended to see your doctor who may recommend appropriate medications as well as other for safe removal methods. They can also help determine the underlying cause and recommend safe ways to manage the condition, such as using softening ear drops periodically
