Actor, Abiodun Adekunle, better known as ‘Sóbàtà’, studied Computer Engineering at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Ondo State. Having made a name for himself in the entertainment industry, he speaks with Rukiyat Ogunwade about his new movie ‘Adigun Oko Olosho’ and his journey in the movie industry. Excerpts
How was growing up for you?
It is a mixture of challenges and memorable experiences. There were times of joy and excitement, as well as moments of confusion and uncertainty. Overall, it was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. I attended Ondo Boys High School for my secondary school education and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic for my tertiary education where I obtained a Higher National Diploma in Computer Engineering.
At what point did your dream of being an actor start manifesting?
It started manifesting at a young age. I have always been drawn to storytelling and participating in school drama. As I grew older, my passion for acting continued to grow, and I actively sought out opportunities to develop my skills. I joined drama clubs, attended acting workshop and even pursued acting roles in community theatre productions. Each experience reinforced my love for acting and solidified my dream of pursuing it as a career. The more I immersed myself in the world of acting, the more I realised that it was my true calling and something I wanted to dedicate my life to.
Tell us about your new movie, ‘Adigun Oko Olosho’ and lessons to be taken there from?
‘Adigun Oko Olosho’ is a heartwarming and uproarious comedy that reminds us of the importance of laughter and the transformative power of humuor. It tells the story of Adigun, a man who creates a prostitution ring and brings terror to his community. The movie portrays the devastating impact of such illegal activities on the victims, their families, and the society at large. Through powerful storytelling and poignant performances, it exposes the dark reality of manipulation, exploitation, and raises awareness about the need for justice and redemption.
How has your experience in the industry shaped you?
My experience in the movie industry has had a profound impact on shaping me both personally and professionally. It has provided me with invaluable opportunities for growth, learning, and self-discovery. It has shaped me into a more skilled and empathetic actor, while also instilling in me a deep passion for the power of storytelling. It has been a transformative journey that continues to inspire me to grow, learn, and make a positive impact through my craft.
How do you come about the name ‘Sóbàtà’?
The name ‘Sóbàtà’ became a part of who I am as an actor, a reminder of the transformative power of storytelling and the profound impact a role can have on one’s own journey. Playing the lead role in the movie titled ‘Sóbàtà’ did not only allow to bring the character to life on screen but also had a massive impact on my own identity as an actor. The journey of portraying ‘Sóbàtà’, a cobbler with a rich and inspiring story, became a transformative experience that earned me the name ‘Sóbàtà’.

What are the most memorable moments you had in your career?
One of the most memorable moments in my career as an actor was the day I premiered my movie titled “Sobata.” It was a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and collaboration with an incredible team. The anticipation leading up to the premiere was both nerve-wracking and exciting, as I couldn’t wait to share our film with the world. Walking the red carpet at the premiere of “Sobata” was a surreal experience. Seeing the dazzling lights, hearing the cheers from fans, and feeling the energy in the air was a moment I will never forget. It was a validation of all the blood, sweat, and tears poured into bringing this story to life. The premiere of “Sobata” was a milestone in my career, representing the culmination of a project that had challenged and inspired me as an actor. It reminded me of the power of storytelling and the ability of film to touch people’s hearts and minds. It was a moment that will forever be etched in my memory, fueling my passion for acting and motivating me to continue pursuing meaningful projects that have the potential to make a difference.
Tell us about the most challenging role you have ever played as an actor?
It was when I got a script to play a swahili man where I must speak swahili language all through . It took me one month to learn and perfected the script, it was a wow from the producer and the director of the movie after my delivery .. The movie tittle is ALAGOGO IDE
