The Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board of Nigeria (MRTB) has inducted 53 Physiotherapy graduating students of Bowen University, 2023 set, into the profession having completed their academic and professional examinations satisfactorily by the board.
Speaking at the induction and awards ceremony held on Thursday the Registrar, MRTB, Professor Rufai Ahmad Yusuf, expressed satisfaction with the quality of physiotherapists Bowen University is injecting into the profession.
According to him, the board had inducted a total number of 166 Bowen University Physiotherapy graduates into the profession since the College of Health Sciences of the institution started graduating students for the profession in 2020. He noted that Bowen University is producing reliable and responsible graduates in the profession.
While he enjoined the new intake into the profession to keep learning on the job, he advised the university not to relent in its bid to support the development of the physiotherapy profession in Nigeria by increasing its teaching and research facilities to produce more graduates for the country.
The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Jonathan o. Babalola declared that the Physiotherapy programme had been enjoying progress since its commencement in the 2015/2016 session in the institution, fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the MRTB respectively. He noted that Bowen University is one the first private universities in Nigeria to graduate students with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree.
He said “In furtherance to the university’s commitment to producing excellence and world-class physiotherapists, early this year, the National Universities Commission approved the commencement of the Doctor of Physiotherapy programme of which we have started admitting students for the 2023/24 academic session. Meanwhile, we have the NUC’s approval for Masters’ and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physiotherapy respectfully.”
While congratulating the new inductees and their parents for the success story, he charged the inductees to learn from the life of Daniel in the bible who outshined his colleagues in the foreign land and served God. “At Bowen University, one of our core values is innovation, which implies embracing new research methods and technology. No discipline is static. Keep up with the changing world to be relevant in your profession,” he concluded.
Speaking in the same vein, Dr Ayoola Aiyegbusi from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, the guest lecturer of the occasion also confirmed the efficiency and consistency of the teaching and learning process at Bowen University as well as the reliable products it injects into the profession.
In her lecture entitled ‘Physiotherapy Practice in the 21st Century: The Physiotherapist and Personalised Healthcare’, she encouraged the new inductees to embrace and adapt to the best global practices of physiotherapy which she introduced as individualised, and personalised management of patients. She noted that modern-day global practices is highly scientific and more efficient, as she encouraged them to keep learning as they advance in the profession.
