HOURS into the commencement of Saturday’s local government and local council development areas elections in Lagos, the exercise was characterised by low turnout of voters.
Based on observations made at various wards and polling booths in Ifako-Ijaiye and other places, only a handful of voters were seen casting their votes as at 12 noon.
At ward E in Ifako-Ijaiye the few voters available complained of late arrival of voting materials.
Similarly at various wards in Oshodi-Isolo, including, Ward D2, many of the polling booths were virtually empty with just a few ballots cast as at 12noon.
A similar observation was made at various wards in Ikeja, as residents preferred to turn empty roads into football pitches.
However, the exercise went ahead without any violence or squeamish in all the places visited so far.
Speaking on the exercise after casting his ballot, the lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1 in the Lagos Assembly, Hon Olusola Sokunle, said the early morning rains might have played a part in the somewhat apathy of voters towards the exercise.
He however expressed optimism that more people would soon come out to cast their votes.
