The industrial action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), which commenced on Tuesday, recorded partial compliance in Anambra State.
Our correspondent, who moved around the state on Wednesday to ascertain the level of compliance, observed that educational institutions opened for lectures, just as banks and other public places shunned the strike.
At Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, students were seen attending lectures, just as staff of the institution went about their normal duties.
The strike, however, registered substantial compliance in government ministries, agencies, and parastatals.
For example, the Anambra State Secretariat, which houses most of the ministries in the state, was shut down and was also devoid of human presence.
However, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Humphrey Emeka Nsofor, told our correspondent in an interview that the strike registered 75 per cent compliance, saying the union only had problems with banks.
“I can say that we registered 75 per cent compliance. The strike was a success. The only place we had issues was in banks, but on Wednesday, we are going to visit banks, and I’m sure they will comply.
“Most of the public places that opened today will not open tomorrow, when we continue our awareness. The strike started just yesterday, and you know that some people may not have heard of it. So, most of the people who opened today will not open tomorrow.”
