Marketmen and women in Kwara State have gathered in prayers to support Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s aspiration to become the president of the country in 2023.
The marketers, who organised inter-religious prayers for Professor Osinbajo at the Oloje area of Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Friday, said that more than 10,000 marketers in the state benefitted from the federal government’s Trader Moni scheme disbursed by Osinbajo in 2019.
Decked in fez caps and T-shirts with the inscription that reads ‘Osinbajo eeyan wa ni,’ the traders said that the vice-president is capable and loved by the traders.
Speaking with journalists, Iyaloja (market leader), Mandate market in Ilorin, Hajia Bilkis Baboko, said that “we chose to organise prayers for the actualization of ‘Professor Osinbajo for president’ because he has done a lot for Kwara market women and men, especially during the disbursement of Trader Moni which he personally came to hand over to us.
“In the process of disbursement, he was playing and talking with women and children. Since then we have developed an interest in him. We are confident that if he becomes the president, he will do more to move the country forward.
“If he becomes the president, market men and women in the state are urging his government to give out revolving loans to traders. The interest rates on the loans from commercial banks are too high. It is like we are working for those commercial banks.”
Another speaker, Iyaloja of Agaka market, also in Ilorin, Hajia Lateefat Ajanaku, said that the prayers were put together to support Vice President in his quest.
Hajia Ajanaku, who said that Professor Osinbajo is concerned about the welfare of traders, especially women, explained that,
“We are optimistic that Osinbajo’s presidency will solve all the current challenges facing the country.
“Seriously speaking, things have degenerated and almost brought the nation to its kneels. We are determined to support till the end.”
Hakeem Aladie of Oja-Tuntun in the metropolis said that “we are gathered here in solidarity for the Vice President Osinbajo’s aspiration to fly the flag of our party, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections.
“We are also supporting him in prayers based on what he has done as we benefitted greatly from Trader Moni which he came to disburse to traders. This is payback time for him. We believe in his capacity. All other aspirants are our people, but we believe he can do it better.
“And if he emerges as president, we traders want him to focus on two cardinal areas of human empowerment and youth employment.”
