The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Social Services in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Honourable Ochidi Usman Shehu, says the House will intensify its oversight functions in 2025.
Hon. Ochidi made this statement on Monday in Lokoja during the budget defence by the State Minister of Health at the Assembly complex.
The Kogi Assembly lawmaker solicited a high level of cooperation and unity from Kogites to move the health sector to the next level of development.
“It’s on this note that I also wish to sound a note of warning to all agencies and parastatals that will not be in conformity with the developmental agenda of His Excellency, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, and that of the 8th Assembly, under the leadership of Alh. Umar Aliyu Yusuf. We, the Committee, have resolved to be frequent with our oversight function in the year 2025. Let us see ourselves as partners in progress, saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the health sector of Kogi State meets global best practices,” he stated.
Earlier, the Acting Provost of Kogi State College of Health Science and Technology Idah, Sanitarian Umar Anataku Shaibu, argued that the institution is facing challenges such as the lack of perimeter fencing, a computer-based centre for examinations and lectures, bad road networks, and a lack of an administrative block and entrepreneurship development centre.
He stressed that the government needs to employ professionals and provide adequate classrooms for academic activities.
He said, “The government has been trying a lot for us in the area of accreditation of courses. They have aided us, and we have secured true accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for two Higher National Diploma courses. This was made possible by our amiable governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, who funded the programme. By God’s grace, we have secured accreditation. It has not been so since 1976. For the very first time, our students will go for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.”
