An organisation under the auspices of the Kano Scholars Assembly (KSA) has expressed its dismay over what it termed as “disparities in judgements involving the ruling party against other opposition parties posing danger to the nation’s democracy.”
This is just as the body warned the judiciary against the dangers of delivering varying judgements in similar cases as well as impartiality saying it is detrimental to the integrity of the judicial system of the country.
Making this known on Wednesday, the spokesman of the KSA Alhaji Abdurrazak Baba, while addressing newsmen in Kano further condemned what they term as injustice and compromise within the judiciary.
The KSA, further warmed against an impending loss of public confidence in the fairness and independence of the judiciary if the situation is left unchecked.
However, while commenting on the judgement on the Kano governorship election tussle delivered by the Appeal Court, the group expressed dissatisfaction over the drama that surrounded the issuance of the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement that was in contrast with the judgement delivered during the court session.
“It is evidently clear that the CTC issued after four days of the judgment indicates that the judgment is in favour of the appellants.
“We cannot ignore the fact that similar cases have been treated differently based on the political affiliations of the parties involved.
“This selective approach to justice undermines the very foundations of our democracy and threatens to turn our beloved state into a breeding ground for a one-party system.
“We cannot allow the sacrifices of our forefathers and the principles of democracy to be eroded by political expediency.
“We unequivocally condemn any form of injustice and compromise within the judiciary.
“The people of Kano State have long enjoyed a tradition of peace and stability, and we will not stand idly by as some individuals attempt to jeopardise the hard-earned tranquility of our state,” the spokesman stated.
The group finally said that Nigerians have the right to know the truth and called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the varying judgements issued in the Kano governorship election tussle Appeal Court judgement.
He added that “the people have the right to know the truth and only through transparency and accountability can restore faith in our judicial system.”
