KANO State government has promised to upgrade the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp situated in Karate Local Government Area of the state from 2500 to 5000 capacity.
Speaking at the closing ceremony for the 2017 Batch A Stream 1 Corps members’ orientation course, the state’s acting governor, Hafiz Abubakar, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Comrade Muhammad Garba, said the state government was aware of the challenges facing the scheme, and had awarded contract to upgrade the camp facilities.
This is just as the state coordinator of the corps, Alhaji Ladan Baba, allayed fears that if the camp is upgraded it would complicate the problem of corps members’ rejection, saying the public and private sectors have the capacity to absorb up to 10,000 corps members per batch, as many requests from various organisations are currently being turned down due to shortage of corps members.
The acting governor also maintained that the government had been consistent in paying the allowance of corps members under the state Ministry, Departments and Agencies since January and would sustain the tempo.
While warning the MDAs not to reject any corps members posted to their organisations, he promised to work with relevant agencies to ensure safety of lives and properties of the corps members during their stay in Kano.
The state NYSC coordinator, Ladan Baba, said in line with the posting policy of the scheme, most of the corps members had been posted to four critical areas of education, health, infrastructure and agriculture, urging them to shun all forms of indiscipline that may impede harmonious relationship between them and their host community.
