As President Muhammad Buhari made his first working visit to Imo State today, Thursday, September 9, there were empty streets as the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) virtually grounded all social, economic and government activities in the state.
Major spots in Owerri, the capital city of the state, were empty even as residents, street traders have deserted streets and roads including their shops, and business centres.
Vehicular movement in and out of Owerri was grounded, as there was little presence of both private and commercial vehicles in the city at about 9 am.
All markets, motor parks, filling stations, financial institutions, shops, eateries hotels were closed as residents resorted to remain at home following the order.
The popular Egbu Road linking the Chukwukadebia Nwoha/Dick Tiger technological tunnel ready for commissioning by the visiting president, was also empty at the time of filing this report.
The situation was the same at Okigwe, Wethedral, Duglas Roads, Port Harcourt Road, Onitsha Road, and Orlu Road, as the case may be.
Our Correspondent in Owerri monitoring the situation in Owerri said that armed security agencies had been deployed to all parts the state to combat any form of insecurity.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Mbadiwe Emelumba, during a media briefing on Wednesday in Owerri, had said that the leadership of markets in the state decided on their own to close market to according a warm reception to Mr President.
He did not, however, say if the traders would be converging somewhere else to organise a reception for the president.
