Every March 8th, people around the world mark the International Women’s Day. Students of Tekhols Schools, Oluwokekere, Basorun, Ibadan, Oyo State, join others in celebrating and appreciating the women who care for us every day.
Great Abiodun-Kolawole, 13 years old, JSS 3
THE women in my life, whose roles I cannot quantify, are my mum, teachers, proprietress, cleaners, my aunt, and my grandma. To support my mum, I help to cook, wash her car, make her proud by achieving excellent results in the forthcoming BECE, and develop more boldness to face the crowd. My little way of supporting and appreciating our school cleaner is by helping her keep the classroom clean to reduce her workload. I will take a walk with my grandma to celebrate today with her. For my mum, a self-designed card, full of lovely poems and messages, is my little gift to her on this day, telling her that I love her.
Oyindamola Adelaja, 10 years old, JSS 1
Today, I celebrate my mother, aunties, grandma, my teachers in my school and church, my hairdresser, and my tailor. They all play important roles in my everyday life. My mother provides for, protects, and encourages me, making many sacrifices when I feel down. My hairdresser and tailor contribute to my nice appearance every time. I love them all. God bless them. My little way of appreciating my mother today is to say: “I love you, and will do anything for you. I promise to make you proud. Enjoy this song: ‘Mummy ooo, wapelaye, mummy ooowajeunomo…”
Iremide Olagoke, 5 years old, Grade 1
I love my mummy because she cares for me. She cooks, washes my clothes, and sweeps the house. I will support her with house chores. When I grow up, I would always support her. I would like to buy my mummy a car in the future.
Najeebah Salam, 11 years old, JSS 3
I have always liked seeing women in high positions, such as presidents. In addition, they should be handled with care, like eggs. The special women who make me feel safe and are there for me every day are my mum and school mum. One special way to celebrate these women today is by telling them how special they are through beautiful poems and singing the rhyme: “Who sat and watched my infant bed…” with a hug. Another gift I will give is a beautifully designed craft with a letter to express my gratitude.
Treasure Isaac, 6 years old, Grade 2
The women who support me are my mummy, teacher, big mummy, and grandma. I appreciate my mummy for taking care of my siblings and me. She cooks for us. My teacher makes sure I pass my exams, while grandma prays for me every day and always knows how to make me happy. I will tell my mummy to buy a cloth for grandma on my behalf.
Nihinlola Abiola, 10 years old, JSS 1
My mother, grandma, aunt, teacher, and cleaner are the women I am celebrating and appreciating today. I will show them love, pray and respect them, do all my house chores, and pass my exams. On this occasion, I will appreciate the everyday sacrifices they make for me by giving them different gifts that I have made—such as a drawing of my mum and me, including a love letter, bead earrings, and a knitted purse.
Teminireoluwa Sanusi, 8 years old, Grade 4
One of the things I appreciate about women is that they would still cook even when they are tired. They impart knowledge about things I do not know and always show kindness and care. I will continue to love, respect, and help all the women who care for me, including my mum, aunty, grandma, teacher, and even my niece.
Adediwura Adedeji, 10 years old, Grade 5
As the world celebrates women today, I will join others in celebrating the women who contribute to my progress every day in different ways and places—at home and school. I am thankful to my mum and grandma, who make me feel special; to my aunts, who care for me; and to my teacher, who makes every mathematical operation seem simple. For today’s event, I will present to my mum a heart-shaped drawing on cardboard with the inscription: “Happy International Women’s Day to the best woman in the world.”
Ebube Samuel-Kayode, 10 years old, JSS 1
The best way to support my mum is by lending a helping hand with house chores and running errands. I will always support her with my prayers and love. I will also give my aunt a gift when I can afford it, and support the school cleaner by not littering the floor. I will support my teacher by listening attentively in class and preparing well for my forthcoming examinations. I will buy a gift to appreciate the first woman I knew, my mum, no matter how small. I pray that God will bless these women in my life.
Jamiel Aina, 8 years old, Grade 3
I will give the women in my life—my mother, grandma, aunt, and my neighbour’s mother—something that will remain in their hearts forever. The gift is to make them a part of my life, as well as make them proud of me every time. My wish is that when I become an adult and start working, I will appreciate my mother by giving her half of everything I have.
Abdul-Salam Ogundele, 10 years old, Grade 4
I celebrate these wonderful women around me—my mummy, sister, teachers, and the cleaner. I promise to continually obey all of them. On International Women’s Day, every year, I would always present a beautiful craft to my mummy until I grow old.
