A Civil Society Organisation (CSO) in the Hajj and Umrah industry, Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), has commended the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for looking inward to appoint an acting secretary to the commission.
NAHCON announced the appointment of Alhaji Alidu Shutti as acting secretary on Wednesday, replacing Abdullahi Kontagora, who had tendered his resignation.
In a statement on Thursday, signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, and made available to Tribune Online in Abuja, IHR lauded the decision to appoint an acting secretary from within the commission’s staff.

The group stated that Shutti’s appointment aligned with its stance that the commission should always look inward when filling vacancies, asserting that Hajj is a highly technical and unique exercise that requires individuals with practical experience.
“We have always advocated for looking inward whenever there is a vacancy within the commission because we believe the staff are better positioned to serve due to their wealth of experience. Hajj, being a highly technical and unique exercise, requires individuals with practical on-field experience to ensure its success.
“We are particularly delighted by the choice of Alidu Shutti because of his wealth of experience and his rise through the ranks. He has demonstrated remarkable abilities in all the positions he has held in NAHCON to date,” IHR stated.
The CSO also noted that looking inward to fill vacant positions would motivate staff to continue to perform well, as they would know they have a better chance of career progression.
IHR, however, called on Mr. Shutti to live up to the expectations of not just the leadership of NAHCON, but also all stakeholders within the Hajj and Umrah industry.
