COMMITTED to ensure police officers are motivated, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training and development, supervising South-south Geo-political zone, Emmanuel Inyang has said that the Inspector-General of Police. Ibrahim Idris is committed towards an improved welfare that motivate the force to effectively discharge their duties.
Speaking with journalists in Yenagoa, Inyang said that the welfare of police officer is taken as a top priority by the top management of the police force, stressing that since the IG came on board several officers, including the rank and file have enjoyed rapid promotion; and assured that more would be promoted.
“Since the present leadership came on board the police force has experienced rapid promotion, therefore we employ you to work harder to justify your new status” DIG said.
He regretted that it is unhealthy for police to retire without roof on their heads, pointing that to correct the anomalies, housing has received serious attention; even as he urged the state command to look for land that can be acquired to build a housing estate to that police officers could get a house at affordable rate after retirement.
Addressing the issue of inadequate manpower, the DIG averred that management intends to improve manpower by ensuring that no fewer than 31,000 police officers are recruited annually in the next five years to effectively police the country.
“I want to use this medium to advise all police officers to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), because a police officer has to be healthy to police society” Inyang advised.
Inyang submitted that retirees are not left out of the improved welfare scheme, stressing that the Police Pension Office has set aside N200m for retirees, even as he noted that welfare package is also set aside to cater for families of police officers that died in the line of duty.
Earlier, the State Police Commissioner, Asuquo Amba had stated the challenges of the command to include, inadequate manpower, logistics, patrol vehicles/gunboats and surveillance gadgets, accommodation and the need to erect a befitting state command.
Amba also stressed the need for more area command and police post in the state to ensure that the police is closer to the public, even as he lauded the achievements made so far since he assumed office; while thanking the public for providing useful information that has continuing to yield better result in policing the state.
