How our ex-student was attacked, killed by gunmen ― LASU

The management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo has explained how and where a former student of the institution, Mr Nurudeen Alowonle otherwise known as Omomeewa was attacked and shot dead by armed men on Wednesday outside the campus and few minutes after he left the school premises.

The university, which said it received the news with great shock and sympathised with the deceased’s family explained that Alowonle, a graduate of education management truly came to campus on that day on invitation by the school’s disciplinary committee sitting over a case that was delaying the release of his certificate.

The university’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya made the explanation in a statement on Friday, noting that a staff of the university, who is a senior assistant registrar, Mr Waheed Majekodunmi was also attacked with him by the same gunmen but survived.

According to him, Mr Alowonle and several other students were facing disciplinary panels over a case of admission racketeering levelled against them since 2019 but the case had to be dragged this long because of COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted activities on campus and elsewhere globally.

“So, on the resumed sitting of the panel, he and other students were invited for defence on Wednesday and he was the first person that appeared before the panel and through before 2:00 pm.

“But on his own, he stayed behind on campus and met with Mr Waheed Majekodunmi and they both went to socialize at the university Senior Staff Club till pass 8:00 pm after which they left together through the Iba Gate of the university for their destinations.

“And because they didn’t get a vehicle to convey them at the school junction as it was already late due to the nature of the environment, they were said to be trekking down to where they would get a vehicle when they were attacked and dispossessed of their valuables by armed robbers and in the process shot them.

“While Mr Majekodunmi was lucky to have escaped with gunshot wounds and got helped by passersby to a nearby hospital, Alowonle couldn’t make it.

Mr. Adekoya said that was the true story concerning the incident and that the injured staff is receiving treatment at the university health centre.

He, however, said the university security department is working with the government security agencies to investigate the incident with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.
