Companies such as Google, Microsoft, and SAP now want talent who not only possess strong technical skills but also demonstrate leadership, adaptability, and a global mindset.
For those pursuing a tech career, a strong foundation in relevant skills is essential. Beyond coding, data analysis, or cloud computing, organizations prioritize professionals who excel in collaboration, critical thinking, and cross-functional teamwork. Developing expertise in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and enterprise solutions can significantly enhance career prospects. Upskilling through certifications, open-source contributions, and hands-on projects provides a competitive edge in an ever-evolving job market.
It is also important to recognize that global tech companies offer various non-technical roles, with opportunities existing in program management, product management, sales, business development, and channel management, among others. These roles are integral to the success of these organizations and present viable career paths for professionals with diverse skill sets.
Using my personal experience as an example, pivoting from a decade long career in banking to technology was made possible by articulating the specific skill sets I had garnered over the years, identifying transferable skills that could match job roles in the Technology sector like, business development, sales and channel management and effectively articulating the link to these skills and impressive performance in previous roles. Beyond technical competence, effective communication and strategic positioning are crucial. Establishing a strong personal brand through LinkedIn, writing thought leadership articles, and participating in industry discussions can attract valuable opportunities. Networking is equally essential, as many global firms rely on employee referrals to fill open roles. Recruiters frequently scout for talent through professional networks, making visibility a key factor in career advancement.
The hiring process in global tech firms is rigorous, often involving multiple interview rounds assessing problem-solving abilities, technical proficiency, and cultural fit. Preparation should include structured problem-solving practice, refining storytelling techniques to highlight impact in previous roles, and gaining a solid understanding of the target company’s business model. Many Nigerian professionals have successfully transitioned into these organizations by leveraging mentorship, networking with industry leaders, and actively pursuing opportunities aligned with their career aspirations.
One significant challenge professionals face when entering global roles is cultural adjustment. The ability to navigate diverse work environments, collaborate with colleagues across different time zones, and adapt to varying communication styles is crucial for long-term success. These organizations will often look for a cultural fit for the organization’s style. Nigerian professionals bring a unique perspective, resilience, and innovative mindset that can drive meaningful contributions within multinational teams.

It is a really good idea to stress test your understanding of organizational priorities regularly and ensure that your work aligns.
