He said this while delivering his inaugural lecture entitled: Silencing the Silent Killers, which was the 431st in the university’s inaugural lecture series.
He said, “A Silence killer is a disease that a person lives with for some time without knowing that he or she has it, until the disease has hurt enough to kill,” adding that the right herbal medicines could be used to confront these ailments.
According to him, some of these killer diseases include hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, obstructive sleep apnoea, heart disease and cancer.

Speaking on the pharmaceutical values herbal medicine, he said, “the beneficial effects of vegetable and fruits could be due to the presence of compounds with antioxidants properties.”
He went on to say that, “Antioxidant products may either function intrinsically to scavenge free radicals or specifically stimulate the body’s defence system.”
He stressed that, “Factors such as sedentary lifestyle, diet and stress have been identified as the precipitating agents for the silent killers. Efforts should be made to avoid these.”
He recommended that people should endeavour to consume a lot of fruits and vegetables because they are rich in antioxidants and other beneficial phytoconstituents.
