A diaspora group, The Goodluckans 2027 Diaspora Leadership Council, has condemned recent public statements against former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing them as unfair to a leader it says upheld democratic principles and national unity.
In a statement signed by the coordinator of the group, Eliana Melekwe and made available to journalists on Saturday , the group defended Jonathan’s record, stating that he remained “one of the most respected democratic leaders Nigeria has produced.”
It added that the former president left office with less personal wealth than many of his predecessors, not due to lack of opportunity, but because “he chose integrity, peace, service, and national unity over personal enrichment.”
Addressing social media commentator VeryDarkMan on remarks made against former president Jonathan a few days ago, the council urged him to reconsider and withdraw the statements .
The group in the statement further said that public influence must be exercised responsibly, fairly, and truthfully, especially when addressing national figures whose records and sacrifices are well documented in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Citing Jonathan’s concession of power after the 2015 election, the council recalled his widely quoted remark “My political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.”
The group noted that President Jonathan served Nigeria with sincerity and with his whole heart, adding that his leadership style was defined by humility, tolerance, and commitment to democratic principles.
The council said Jonathan’s conduct since leaving office had continued to earn him support at home and abroad, with many Nigerians calling on him to contribute to the country’s rebuilding.
The Council however reiterated its commitment to promoting truth, democracy, peace, accountability, and national unity as Nigeria navigates its current challenges.
According to the statement, the group, which is built on patriotism, sacrifice and genuine concern for the state of the nation, represents Nigerians abroad across professions including nursing, medicine, law, entrepreneurship, academia, and industry.
